Cosmetic Surgery: Facing the Knife – Is It Worth It?
Chances are, there’s something about your body that you don’t like. Maybe your tummy is too flabby, your breasts are too small or your nose is strangely shaped. Maybe you can’t quite shake the last of your baby weight or perhaps you’ve struggled with the way your ears stick out since you were a child. Whatever your imperfection may be, it probably bothers you to the point that you have considered pursuing cosmetic surgery.
Despite the widespread availability of surgery, many people are unsure of how to decide whether cosmetic surgery is the right choice or whether the risks outweigh the benefits of cosmetic surgery. There are pros and cons to every surgery and becoming as informed as possible will help ease the difficulty of the decision you are currently faced with.
What are the risks?
Unfortunately, cosmetic surgery can be very pricey. Most insurance companies do not cover cosmetic procedures under ordinary circumstances. Situations where cosmetic surgery might be covered is if you are in a car accident or undergo a medically-related procedure, such as chemotherapy. Depending on the procedure and the doctor, you may be forced to pay several thousand dollars for your cosmetic surgery. Also consider that if there are complications with the procedure, a follow-up surgery or operation may be necessary at an additional expense.
The recovery time for cosmetic surgery also varies. There may be swelling and you could even develop an infection at the surgical site. It might take several weeks or even several months for your body to look “normal” again. While you may eventually be happy with your surgical decision, remember that the recovery period may be difficult and exhausting. If you have a breast augmentation procedure, for example, you will be unable to lift anything for awhile.
What are the benefits?
The primary benefit of cosmetic surgery is the increased self-confidence. If you feel like everyone stares at your crooked nose or you just can’t handle looking at yourself in the mirror, cosmetic surgery can certainly improve the way you view yourself and your body. Chances are that nobody else is bothered by your personal body issue the way that you are, but if you really can’t get over the problem, surgery can certainly make you feel more confident and comfortable with yourself.
Remember that nobody else can make this difficult decision for you. If you feel pressured to get surgery by your boss or your partner, remember that they will not be around you forever. Your body will be with you, and you alone, for the rest of your life. If you believe that a cosmetic surgery will make you feel more comfortable in your own skin, than facing the knife could very well be worth it, but you should never feel forced into your decision.
